When my kids were planning for college, I struggled to get them to apply for scholarships. I sat on scholarship committees, so I thought it was a no-brainer that they would listen to me but — nope. It was like pulling teeth and often ended in frustration for both of us.
When I bought my first home — the one I would live in for 14 years — it was small, just under 1,000 square feet, and there were hardwood floors throughout. At one point, I decided to carpet two of the rooms. They weren’t that big, so it didn’t cost that much. No big deal. Cut to my current home, in which every room needed new carpet. I was thinking, “No problem — shouldn’t be too bad.” I was adamant about putting in carpet throughout the house. I called several places and ended up going with the popular place we had seen a million commercials and billboards for over the years.
I never wanted the fact that I was a single parent to be a crutch. I didn’t want anyone to look at me in a “poor Dorethia and her kids” kind of way. I was determined to ensure that my girls didn’t miss out on anything because they weren’t in a two-parent home. But the reality is that it was hard.
